Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford started acting in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application, she was finally accepted. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season.
